CHAPTER TEN

CHASING TROUBLE

Billy! They’re taking that thing right to your dad’s office,” said Dannie. “What if they …?”

“They’re not going to hurt my father,” Billy cut in. “I won’t let them!”

He whirled on his heel and raced for the front doors. “This way!” he said. “We’ll take the inside stairs. Maybe we can get to Dad’s office first and warn him!”

Billy moved faster than he ever had in his life. He, Finn, and Dannie tore through the front room where the ticket office was. Their boots made such a clatter on the stairs that Mr. Oliver called out from the store, “Hey, stop that racket!”

Billy just ran faster. As he neared the top of the stairs, he saw the door to his father’s office. He raced down the hall toward it.

“Dad!” he cried, throwing the door open. It hit the wall with a bang that shook the whole room. Billy’s father and Mr. Mackey were bent over some papers on Mr. Cole’s desk. They whirled around in alarm.

“What’s the matter, son?” asked Mr. Cole.

“Look out!” Finn said, charging into the office so fast he slammed into the desk. Papers and plans went flying. “Some men are coming! They want to—”

He gasped as the wooden door to the balcony creaked on its hinges. The door swung inward. Billy saw the point of the drill bit, and then the bald top of Pete Delray’s head.

“You leave my dad and Mr. Mackey alone!” he yelled.

Billy flung himself against the door with all his strength. It banged against Mr. Delray and the drill bit. They were squeezed tight between the balcony door and the doorframe.

“Ow!” cried Mr. Delray.

The drill bit dropped from his hands. It banged heavily to the floor, half in and half out of the office. Billy couldn’t see the other man. But he heard him out on the balcony, talking urgently to Mr. Delray.

“What’s going on here?” said Mr. Mackey. Usually he was a laughing, loud man. But now his voice was tense. He and Mr. Cole pulled Billy away from the door.

“Billy, stop this instant!” said Mr. Cole.

Billy struggled to pull free, but his father kept a tight grip on his shoulders. Pete Delray stepped through the balcony door, the other man right behind him. Billy gasped as they bent to pick up the lancelike drill bit.

“But, Dad! Mr. Delray wants to get back at the railway for his hurt foot. With that!” Billy twisted around his father to point at the drill bit.

Dannie and Finn stood uncertainly next to Mr. Cole’s desk, eyeing the drill bit warily. “Should I run to the security office and get Mr. Jenkins?” Dannie asked.

For a moment, Billy’s father just stared at Billy, Finn, and Dannie. When he finally spoke, his voice was filled with disbelief—and annoyance.

“Do you mean to say,” he said slowly, “that you’re causing this ruckus because you think these gentlemen want to hurt Mr. Mackey and me? They’re not here to do any harm. Mr. Delray and Mr. Fritz are
